A new module, Pan/Spin offers users the ability to achieve a variety of stereo panoramic movement of sounds through the stereo sound-stage. With Pan one can choose the breadth of stereo image: normal, wide and narrow. ‘Normal’ moves sounds within the ambit governed by the loudspeaker set-up, from left to right. ‘Wide’ extends the movement by attenuating the sound signal beyond the left and right speakers, while ‘Narrow’ focusses the image within the ‘half-left’ and ‘half-right’ locations. In Pan mode, one can choose from a variety of movement cycles – from L-R, R-L, L-R-L and R-L-R – and select the number of cycles required from 1 cycle for the duration of the sound up to 100. Alternatively, random movements of pan positions numbering from 2 to 1000 may be selected.
The Spin mode of this module permits the sound image to be spun clockwise or anti-clockwise from a given starting location between start and end rates (specified in revolutions per minute) from 0 to 200 rpm. A button labeled ‘Apply single rotation speeds’ sets the default speed for a single 360° revolution over the duration of the sound-file. The user should understand that the Spin module effects an illusion of sound around the listener. Note that the next release of the ProcessPack software will include an extension of the process with MultiSpin, where one can move multiple soundfiles – or copies of the same sound! – at different spin rates.
Version 1.4 also extends earlier modules: Echo now gives control over input gain, rolloff, average delay and number of reflections (up to 1000), with a button which re-sets the default values. Wraith, the spectral reduction module, now adds an option to invert the spectrum around a specified frequency.
